Lancaster University has announced that the Underpass is to close for a three week period between 21st July and 11th August due to necessary maintenance, only a year since it was reopened following a prolonged period of renovation. The planned work will include replacing the original pipework; extending and improving the lighting as well as installing ten motorcycle parking bays at either entrance. The University web page explains that the closure is necessary to “ensure your safety during this work”.
University commuters will be glad to hear that these parking bays can be used by any staff member, student or visitor without the need of a parking permit – a necessity that has frustrated and continues to frustrate many other vehicle owners. When quizzed about the possible overcrowding and potential safety hazards that these motorcycle bays may present in their proposed location, University House were reluctant to make further comment, stating “we apologise for the disruption caused while we work to improve the area.”
As a result of the closure all bus services are set to be redirected to Bowland Avenue where they will arrive and depart from outside the Chaplaincy Centre. In addition to this, buses stopping opposite and outside the Sports Centre will also be briefly closed during the summer period. The disruption is set to not only cause disturbances to the hundreds of University commuters, but also to Lancaster’s Muslim population who will be celebrating Ramadan only yards from the temporary bus stops.
